South Africans might be a multi cultural population, with its eleven official languages (namely English, Afrikaans, Ndebele, Sepedi, Xhosa, Venda, Tswana, Southern Sotho, Zulu, Swazi and Tsonga) and its mixed races and cultural diversity. This led the country to get the suiting title "The Rainbow Nation"
Nevertheless, there is one thing that all South Africans have in common, and that is their deep passion to BRAAI
Damien's uncle Marco was our "grillmaster" last week end
South Africans love to come together for a braai, with their family, friends, neighbors or work colleagues, to indulge in the pleasure of having a braai together
You remember our earlier post "The Move"? This is the new place from Damien's mom.
Its perfect for braais and get together!
I had many barbecues in Switzerland, but South Africans take it to another level. There is always tons of meat in all possible variations. One of my favorites are boerewors (really tasty sausage) and sosaties (meat cooked on skewers) also millie (mais) will never be missing at a braai.
To prepare the fire is the gents work and everyone has their own special technique. I guess what all of those techniques have in common is that beer and wine shall be consumed in a steady manner until and after the fire is ready. ;-)
The ladys will prepare a vast variety of salads
(couscous, greek, green and mixed salads) just to name a few
I think the magic that makes South African braais so much different and I would safely say better than barbecues, is the passion that is put in to the preparation. To prepare for a braai is a social event in itself and needless to say its a wonderful thing to spend an entire day with people you care, to relax, chat and eat good food together. The South Africans simply take time for this and have it imbedded in their culture.
